COMPRES promotes research and education in the study of Earth Science materials properties with two types of programs, a Core program and a Grand Challenge program. The Core program supports the infrastructure for education and research including operational costs for earth science beamlines at national synchrotron radiation facilities, development projects for the community research program, educational efforts for the community, and a central office to coordinate these activities. The Grand Challenge program brings together members of the community to focus on specific scientific projects such as the rheology, elasticity and thermodynamic properties of earth materials, and technical developments, such as the design of new, larger-volume diamond-anvil cells.
